Coalition Publishes Briefing on Dangers of HGM

The coalition has published a short briefing entitled “Countering the Threat of GM Designer Babies and Eugenics.” The four-page document covers all the main arguments surrounding Human Genetic Modification (HGM). It details some of the history of the current push by some scientists to legalise HGM, and also delves back into the history of eugenics that has brought us to this point. The briefing discusses safety concerns raised by the technology of HGM and the ethics of subjecting children to risky experiments, when safe methods already exist for avoiding the birth of children with serious genetic impairments. It argues that HGM would unleash a new and very dangerous form of eugenics, driven by corporate profit and consumerism. It also discusses the ethics of designing children, arguing that this turns them into just another consumer commodity. The dangers of HGM can only be met through a global treaty banning HGM and human cloning.
